Our general purpose Model 3542 axial extensometers measure axial strain in tensile, compression and cyclic fatigue test applications. Strain measurement with an extensometer is more accurate than using the data from test machine position sensors and needed for accurate and repeatable determination of modulus. Most test methods involving yield and modulus measurements require an extensometer. They are common to testing metals, plastics, composites and ceramics. Model 3542 gage lengths range from 0.5 to 2 inches (and 10 to 50 mm). Strain travel ranges from 5% to 100% in tension (+) and compression (-).
Our units use a dual flexure design to be lightweight yet rugged – virtually insensitive to vibrations common to high frequency tests. Model 3542 extensometers require signal conditioning electronics, since they are strain gauged transducers. For systems lacking required electronics, we provide a variety of solutions, allowing the extensometer output to be connected to data acquisition boards, chart recorders or other equipment.
