Bending Masonite Materials Bend Testing of Particle Board

Compared with Tensile or Compression testing Flexural bend testing presents you with more choices to make when configuring a test machine. Our application specialist can save you time as you move through the process to configure your new machine or if you are adding fixtures to an existing machine.

Masonite is a TestResources customer whose manufacturing process produces high bending strength and tensile strength materials used to produce high end composite wood panels used for doors and other construction products. They purchased a 100 Series Modular electromechanical test machine configured to satisfy testing requirements of ASTM D1037.

ASTM D 1037 is an industry standard test method that establishes how to measure the properties of wood-base fiber and particle panel materials produced as panels such as particleboard, medium-density fiberboard and hardboard. The nature of wood fiber and wood particle based materials gives them many of the desired material properties of wood, with a more uniform structure and more consistent properties.

It should be noted that ASTM has published many bend test standards, including those for clear wood as well as fiber board and particle board. Each standard has slightly different requirements for conducting flexural bend tests, which accommodate the specific wood material being tested.

ASTM D1037 static bend test requires a special rounded loading block with a radius 1.5 times larger than the test board thickness. Bend fixture supports can be either rounded, with the same specifications as the loading block, or must be a plate with knife-edge supports. The use of articulating supports or adjustable knife edges are useful when compensation for warped specimens is necessary. If you are wondering which type you should you choose, then call our application specialists since they can help you decide.
